From three-line whip to withdrawal in just a few short hours! The government’s insidious plan to hide MPs’ expenses from public view (deliberately overturning a High Court decision) has been dropped after a “viral” internet campaign by online citizens.
Great news. All the netizens involved should be very proud of themselves. Perhaps it does show that there is a point in writing to your MP after all. My guess is that there was sufficient anger to wake sufficient backbenchers into considering doing the right thing that Brown simply had to back down, or lose the vote.
This chain of events shows us two things: that Brown’s government is utterly contemptible and that there is still an element of accountability left in our very badly damaged political system. Now, if only we could somehow force an early election…

*sniff*
I scent weakness…
Labour withdrawal. Excellent!
More!!
I wrote to my MP about it.
Something very peculiar about having our say. Most unfamiliar.
Now, lets get to work on the Lisbon Treaty.
